Lifting Shadows: Words – the authorized biography of Dream Theater, the American progressive-metal band comprising James LaBrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy – traces the band’s history over the last two decades.

As Mike Portnoy notes, “Rich Wilson has truly captured the ups and downs that have made Dream Theater’s journey thus far a very interesting story… Rich has done a remarkable job tracking down almost every single person that has been a part of Dream Theater’s first twenty years.

The book features all new interviews with the band and a host of others who have played their part in the rise of one of prog-metal’s finest bands. It is a tale of the fight for musical integrity, strong professional perseverance, and living out a deep-rooted belief in themselves.

Author biography

Rich Wilson has been writing about rock music for longer than he cares to remember. Along the way, his work has appeared in Classic Rock, Metal Hammer, Record Collector, Record Buyer, Discoveries, Record Mart & Buyer, and Rock Hard. Rich spends much of his time alphabetizing his collection of rock CDs, and lives on the outskirts of Manchester where he annoys his neighbors, long-suffering wife, and labrador with his appalling proficiency on the guitar, and the loud nocturnal playing of obscure 1970’s prog rock albums. Lifting Shadows is his first book.
